The Defence Ministry refused to comment on the report. A pressure group for soldiers' rights said the figure of 78 suicides roughly tallied with its estimate for the forces, where bullying and desertion are rife. "Today suicide accounts for more than half of the total number of deaths in the armed forces," the source told Interfax.
